Learning Support
Your child may need a personalised level of support above that appropriate for others – perhaps because of a particular gift or talent, a sensory impairment or a specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia.
Our small classes enable all pupils to be closely monitored in lessons. The Learning Support co-ordinator will contact parents to arrange screening if there is any concern. This allows any problems that may arise to be quickly identified and passed on for further action if necessary.
If your child has an identified need before joining the school, information is gathered from you and your child before a programme is agreed. Educational psychologists and other specialists are involved when necessary and their advice is shared with relevant staff.
Pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 receiving individual Learning Support are withdrawn from one lesson each week on a rotational basis (so that the individual pupil does not miss the same lesson too frequently). Lessons are given initially for a term, at the end of which we review the level of provision required.
Pupils further up the School have lessons during a study period or, on an
occasional basis, at lunchtimes or before school. Individual Support Plans are drawn up for every pupil with a diagnosed learning difficulty.
Help is given, as appropriate to each individual’s needs. This can be with spelling, writing, punctuation, grammar, reading, comprehension, study skills and basic Maths.
We check progress regularly and review Individual Support Plans at the end of each term. Consultation between the pupil, parents and Head of Learning Support is important to us.
A charge is made termly for individual provision. The cost of support will depend on your child’s needs. Additional costs will be kept to a minimum and will be discussed during the application process.
