Gifted and Talented

St Margaret’s School prides itself in offering students opportunities to undertake real challenges.  Gifted and talented pupils are motivated to achieve their full potential by giving them the strategies that they need to succeed.  They are encouraged to discover more about the real world and how their skills can be utilised in the workplace.

We help them to learn how to improve academic skills in an environment where the student is motivated to learn.  Students are given opportunities, strategies to develop their creativity and are encouraged to develop their confidence and competence.  Specialist learning areas are provided within the school grounds such as the Arthouse and Performing Arts Centre.  All subject teachers are given the material and resources needed to facilitate the learning experience of the gifted cohort.

Most students are intrigued by computers.  Our well equipped computer suites provide access to computer applications used in school to motivate able pupils.  These include Education City and Mathletics which are used in Pre-prep and Prep to support the learning of English, Mathematics, Science and Modern Foreign Languages.  Mathletics and My Maths are examples of applications which are used to motivate students in the Senior School.  The use of a computer allows students to access tasks which have been set to suit their ability level and to challenge their learning processes.  Use of a computer application provides valuable activities for high ability students who need an interesting challenge.

At St Margaret’s School we believe that every pupil is entitled to an extended, balanced and relevant curriculum and that each individual should have the opportunity to make the greatest progress possible.  An able pupils register has been collated and their progress is monitored.

Gifted pupils are registered with the ‘Young, Gifted and Talented’ programme (YG&T).  Membership of the YG&T Learner Academy is available for learners between the ages of 4 and 19. The Learner registers and this application process is then confirmed with the Extended Learning Coordinator.

Kilve Court is an excellent residential centre in Somerset that runs courses in a wide range of subjects for able pupils and students are encouraged to attend appropriate courses.  Liaison with outside agencies ensures that all of our able pupils benefit from courses and excursions.  Sixth form students participate in a trip to the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory as part of the cross-curricular Mathematics and Science programme.

Oxbridge Preparation

An Open Day at Newnham College, Cambridge is attended by a small group of Year 10 pupils from the gifted cohort.  It encourages them to consider their future and aspire to academic success at the highest level.

Year 12 students who are contemplating applying for Oxford or Cambridge are accompanied to the universities for the Sixth Form Open Days in July.   This provides an opportunity to tour the colleges, speak to lecturers and understand the facilities available in which to study an exceptionally wide range of subjects at degree level.

The majority of these pupils have gone on to apply to Oxford or Cambridge and a number of them have been offered places.  Students always gain an immense amount from preparing for the notoriously rigorous Oxbridge interview process.
