Extra Curricular
St Margaret’s has an excellent reputation for providing young people with a full, rounded education – education that goes beyond the classroom. The last calendar year bears testimony to this.
Drama continues to be very popular – both with audiences and students. From commentaries about global warming (Eddie the Penguin) to studies about teenage pressures (Daisy Pulls it Off), (The Lions Pride) and with some light moments from Brecht, the department continues to thrive under the aegis of Hattie Agg-Manning.
CCF had its biennial inspection in the Autumn, with the parade looking very impressive. The highlight of the year was the (very wet) summer week spent at St Mawgan where cadets were really put through their paces.
Music still beats in the heart of St Margaret’s. Nurtured in the Middle School Choir, singers aspire to the Chapel and Chamber choirs. Both of these have formidable reputations for quality, whether lifting the spirits during Cathedral Evensong or performing in ‘Music at the Minster’ in Axminster. Whether it’s Benjamin Britten or John Williams, saxophone or flute, we are always amazed by the variety and depth of the musical talent at St Margaret’s.
Outdoor, preparations are already well under way for the Duke of Edinburgh trip to India in Autumn 2011, with the majority of girls in Y11 and many from the Lower 6th putting their names forward. The school’s support of the Goodwill Village is of great importance and the venture continues to provide a life-changing experience for those who take part. This year St Margaret’s took its 100th Gold Award , with more yet to come. Two 35 mile and one 45 mile Teams were also entered for - and completed - the Ten Tors event in May. Training is exhaustive and gives students an ‘intimate’ awareness of the capricious nature of moorland weather.
In addition to the ‘major’ programmes, the school gives pupils opportunities to dabble in so many additional areas of school-life. MFL trips to Morlaix in March, Year 6 trips to London, Science, Eco-, Art, Mandarin and Dance Clubs, plus a regular set of fixtures and training sessions for sport and PE, keeps pupils very busy indeed.
