Modern Foreign
Languages

We want languages to be an enjoyable experience!  We believe that language learning is fun, fulfilling and fantastically important for your future.

We use songs and rhymes, mimes, puzzles and games and we give you an insight into the culture, customs and cuisine of the countries.

We know that by learning languages, you will broaden your horizons, significantly improve your communication skills and grow in confidence.

Languages can be intellectually challenging as well as reassuringly familiar and we want you to look forward to lessons and experience a real sense of achievement as you learn to understand and speak the language, and become adept at reading and writing it.

French

Year 7: Greetings, you, your family, your home, animals, festivals, the weather, weekend activities; your town, school subjects; food and drink

Year 8: Shops, shopping, food and drink; transport and travel; school routine; talking about the past and the future; ordering in a restaurant; clothes

Year 9: Describing yourself, your family and friends; Paris and your town; past, present and future activities; your career plans; theme parks and accommodation; healthy lifestyle and fitness; accidents and illnesses; holidays

German

Year 7
You will be taught German for half a year. In that time you will learn how to introduce yourselves and describe yourselves and their families. Emphasis is on fun – we do lots of role-plays, pair-work and singing and the smiley scheme is highly motivating.

Year 8:
We broaden your vocabulary and begin to introduce the linguistic structures which will enable them to manipulate the language successfully. Everyone does a project on Germany during the year and prizes are many and magnificent.

Year 9:

You have the opportunity to take part in the German Exchange. We go to our partner school in Stuttgart in December in time for the Christmas markets and St Nicholas and our partners’ return to Exeter in June is in time for sun and beaches.

Spanish

Year 7:
Details about yourself; the alphabet, classroom objects, your family, pets

Year 8:
Describing yourself and your family and friends, school subjects and opinions, where you live, your town, the weather, free time activities

Year 9:

Your house and your bedroom, your free time, future plans, your routine, eating and drinking, shopping
