Youth Parliament

I found out about Youth Parliament through the school notice board and got in touch. The people who organize it work at the Devon County Council in Exeter. I was invited to attend an all day workshop to find out more. We did ice breaking games and then some team building. There were about twenty others there and they were an interesting bunch of people. We learned how to write our manifesto and we were taught how to speak in front of a camera saying what we would like to do if elected.  I then went back to school and started to tell my friends about Youth Parliament. I also spoke in Assembly which was very useful in spreading the word to the whole school.

Youth Parliament is a chance for us the young people of the United Kingdom to have our say in trying to resolve problems in the UK and locally in Devon. When it comes to the voting, Youth Parliament is split into two parts. Firstly, there is a shadow executive in our area of Devon. The shadow executive member acts more as an advisor or consultant to the County Council and becomes involved in projects that affect everyone in the Devon area working to try and resolve the issues that occur. The second part of the Youth Parliament is the UK Youth Parliament candidate who represents Devon in a UK wide conference of young people who then discuss the biggest problems for the whole of the UK and try to resolve them.

Although I do not know yet whether I have been elected, it has helped me to gain confidence in speaking to lots of people. Youth Parliament so far has been very enjoyable and I hope that everyone votes for me so that I can help to change our world.
