29 Students

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

On October 17th, 29 Gold students and 5 staff set off for Southern India on an adventure of a lifetime.

We spent 18 days in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, where we completed our expedition in the Western Ghats, walking through jungle, tea plantations, remote tribal villages and terrain similar to Dartmoor.

The highlight of our visit was staying at the Goodwill Children’s home in Thandigudi, Tamil Nadu.  St Margaret’s has supported the charity for over twenty years and this year, the girls raised over £15,000 to build new classrooms and support the T.O.R.P (Tribal Outreach Project).

Smiling faces and welcoming hands beckoned us into classrooms where we became teachers for 3 days. At the T.O.R.P. project, we created an English Park!  Butterbean trees and orange trees do not often feature in Devon but meandering paths and brick paving lifted the muddy area and entranced the tribal children when they arrived at school the following day.
