‘Thou Shalt Kill’
The1994 Rwanda conflict was something that really interested us: we had watched films about it and read about it and the most amazing thing was that most people didn’t seem to know about it.
The sheer scale of deaths astounded us and we wanted to let people know about the dreadful atrocities that took place and still are taking place in many places around the world.
For our A2 level devised piece we weren’t so intent on giving an accurate historical account of the genocide, but we wanted to make an impact on our audience and raise questions about their own responsibility.
The topic seems extraordinarily relevant in the light of the current crises in Burma. We were also interested in awareness of the danger for journalists who are involved in reporting in war and conflict especially with the recent story of Alan Johnston.
We showed this through the character of Natasha, a British journalist sent out to report on the conflict who eventually loses her life when she tries to save a tutsi mother and daughter from the hutu attack.
It was with these ideas in mind we thought it was only right to donate the money received from doing this production to the ‘Help an orphanage in Rwanda’ charity.
