Devon Youth Parliament
Thank you to all of you who voted for me this year in the Devon Youth Parliament election held in school a few weeks ago. I was very fortunate to be elected to the position of Deputy Member for the Exeter area. This means that I can continue my work on improving public transport and the image of young people in Devon (look out for the forthcoming publicity ‘Don’t judge us until you know us’ coming to the back of a bus near you very soon!).
The election results were announced last Saturday in the Devon County Council Chamber. The outgoing members had to make a short speech outlining the highlights of their year. One of the great benefits of participating in the Youth Parliament is that I have become more confident in public speaking. We were then each presented with a filofax and a specially engraved glass paperweight by Councillor Newcombe, the ‘Young People’s Champion’ on the Council. After the presentation came the really nerve-wracking part; the election results!! I was so happy when I heard my name called out and I am eager to get started this year. Taking part in the Youth Parliament is a great mix of hard work and opportunities for socializing. I look forward to getting the voices heard of all pupils in St Margarets School and hope that others at the school will also consider standing for the elections in 2010.
