The Witches
Four weeks into the first term of the year and ‘The Witches’ is ready to be performed. Without Miss Agg-Manning it would not have been half the performance it has become. The rehearsals were testing and tiring, however the sense of achievement after each one made it all worthwhile (with the help of ‘Dominoes’ pizza which was delivered numerous times.) Miss Agg-Manning pushed the boundaries and made us all step into a completely new style of theatre using physicality to create confidence within the girls and to really let loose and broaden our horizons into the type of theatre we can embrace.
‘The Witches’ has been a wonderful play to embark on. What I enjoyed the most was getting to know different girls from different years in the school. Drama really allows everyone to come together and work as a whole, enabling new friendships to be made. Overall, being within the production of ‘The Witches’ has been a lovely experience and extremely awarding for each and every member of the cast.
We would, of course, like to thank our parents for helping us to commit to the rehearsals and Miss Agg-Manning for her amazing directing!
Hattie - Year 12
As this is my last year at St Margaret’s, I was eager to take a final chance to immerse myself fully in to one of Miss Agg-manning’s drama productions; as she is such a huge inspiration to me. When I was given the lead role of ‘Boy,’ I was excited about the opportunities that would arise while portraying this character - particularly playing a mouse, alongside Abbi Lee, which has been a completely different experience and one, I anticipate, I will never forget. Miss Agg-Manning’s vision is so creative and unique: it is truly a joy to be involved. Having only four weeks to practise and prepare, the rehearsal schedule has been intense yet still pleasurable. I really hope you enjoy the production and the unusual interpretation that we have in store for you!
Beth - Year 13.
I chose to direct ‘The Witches’ because one of the many, many things I love about Roald Dahl is the fact that his stories are unconventional. He is not afraid to ‘go there’, wherever “there” might be. He is wild, surprising, unlikely and slightly macabre, and that makes his books very satisfying on an emotional level. I feel this as an adult, and I’m willing to bet it’s something that children feel too.
It is always a highlight of my year to direct the school play in the Autumn Term. The talent that this school has to offer never ceases to amaze me! I have thoroughly enjoyed directing ‘The Witches’ as it allows me to stretch my imagination, as well as trying to find innovative ways to portray the story on the stage.
The time frame that we had to produce this play was small and made it rather intense. However, I believe it gets the best out of the girls as well as myself, even if I am sometimes a little ‘stressed’! Therefore I want to convey a massive thank you to all the parents, grandparents, guardians and friends who have given up their own time to pick the girls up and drop them off at rehearsals. You have always been so supportive, so for that alone I am truly grateful!
It is now time to join our hero, his friend and his grandmother, as they take on the terrifying Grand High Witch and her gruesome gang, who are plotting to turn all the children of England into mice!
