Ten Tors 2010
And so Friday 7th May 2010 arrived. All the training had been completed, teams were selected, a parents’ briefing session had been held to update and inform all about the event, kit was checked, the training team had set up the base camp on Thursday morning – the event was upon us!
0900 hrs, the minibus full of excited participants left school to go to Okehampton Camp. On arrival, we settled into our base camp and Mr Maxwell and Mrs Harrisson went to register the three teams. During the day, we had a briefing, had a kit check (scrutineering) and prepared our routes. A BBQ at 1730 hrs was followed by some free time to find friends in other teams and to ‘chill out’ before settling down at 2100 hrs.
Saturday 8th May 0500 hrs (yes 5.00 am), the camp awoke to drizzle and music. The teams were re-registered and we packed and had breakfast before going to the start at 0630 hrs. We had a briefing, The Ten Tors prayer and a flypast by the helicopters before the gun fired at 0700 hrs – The Teams were off!
Deadline to cover the Ten Tors course for both 35 mile and 45 mile team was Sunday 1700 hrs.
Day one went very well for all teams (a slight blip for one team led to many panic phone calls when it looked like they failed to visit one Tor – but all was well). The 35s camped at their 8th Tor, the 45s at their 7th Tor.
Day two started equally well, with all groups reaching their next tor. The 35 mile teams finished within 30 mins of each other around midday during the visit by Prince Philip (The event’s patron who joined in the 50th anniversary celebrations). They were presented with their medals, shared stories, had something to eat and were soon on their way home with their parents. Meanwhile the 45s were still walking, they struggled against tiredness and sore feet and finished around 1600 hrs in good spirits.
All the teams finished complete (6 per team) and were a credit to themselves. They should be very proud of what they have achieved.
