Super Science Saturday 2011

Super Science Saturday
Last Saturday, as part of St Margaret’s Outreach program, the Science Department ran a morning of science activities for a record number of enthusiastic Year 5 & 6 pupils from a number of primary schools in the local area.  They had the opportunity to try out some exciting experiments as well as see the Science teachers show off some of their more flammable favourites such as the ‘Screaming Jelly Baby’ demonstration. Some parts of the day took on an ‘early Halloween’ feel. For example, Mr Moore created some hair raising effects with the new Van de Graaff generator, purchased with funds kindly donated by the PSA from the second hand Uniform Shop funds. In Chemistry we made slime whilst in Biology Dr Rolfe introduced the new and very popular activity of maggot writing! I will not supply the details of how maggots know how to write their own names as this would spoil the surprise for our own Year 6, who will do all the ‘Super Science’ activities during Science Week next term. Our visitors were a real credit to themselves and their schools, as they managed to combine high levels of excitement with exemplary behaviour. Many thanks to our Sixth Form assistants (Tessalee Axsel and Emily Waldock), as well as all staff who helped out on this very enjoyable morning.
