Super Science Saturday

This Saturday 25th September marked another triumphant step forward for the Science Department at St Margaret’s. The team put on a day for Year 5 and 6 girls and boys who travelled from all over to quench their thirst for some Saturday Science.

With Dr Cross, the cohort investigated some squelchy slugs and made a colony of woodlice the subjects of their behaviour experiments. Having learnt about animal behaviour, the pupils left the Biology Lab with a reaction stick each, to test, measure and hone their reaction times!

Dr Trimming was up to her usual tricks in the Chemistry lab, ensuring that the youngsters might become her apprentices of pyromania! The group learnt how to pass their ‘Bunsen burner driving test’ and then carry out some flame tests on various chemical elements. This was topped off with a take-away present of slime which the pupils created using chemicals and food colouring.

Physics was with Mr Moore. The group competed to race balloon rockets and created CD-hovercrafts to take home. At the end of the session the gang set their sites a little higher and took turns to launch water rockets from the playground into high( or slightly higher) altitude!

After their day of fun, the best was still to come… The finale! The pupils cheered as Dr Cross was set alight… letting him know that Dr Trimming is not someone to be messed with! Potassium was brought to life in a fury of fits and flames as it was floated on water… and some Jelly Babies met a cruel end as they were sacrificed to the Chemistry gods in a spectacular exothermic oxidation!

On leaving the School, many of the pupils could be heard to exclaim… “Chemistry is the best!”
…Though Mr Moore knew that they really meant Physics!
