Head of Sky News comes to St Margaret’s
Last Friday the Sixth Form and some members of Year 10 and 11 were privileged enough to attend a workshop given by the head of Sky News – John Ryley – who is currently heading a campaign to allow TV cameras in courts after his successful online petition for a parliamentory debate.
Mr Ryley talked to us about how the news is made – which stories they choose to run and which not, where to send news vans and where not. He showed us that the industry is all about snap decisions and risks.
We spent most of the session following a hypothetical day in a news room. It followed the Prime Minister’s run away son, an arrested home secretary for drugs and a national singing superstar in hospital. Behind the camera, leaks and information showed us their stories were linked and they were not all they seemed.
We worked in groups and made our decisions. We also had a taste of rival news stations. It was really interesting to see how the news unfolds behind the camera and to see the choices made before the news even gets to us. Finally we finished by watching a selection of clips by a female reporter.
