Active Kids Get Cooking
Year 5 has successfully completed the Bronze Challenge for the food award scheme. Seven pupils achieved a pass and two pupils gained a merit certificate. The course was based on the ‘Fruit and Vegetable’ section of the ‘Eatwell Plate’ and culminated in the girls preparing a tasty and attractive range of dishes.
‘Active Kids Get Cooking’ is jointly managed by Sainsbury’s Supermarkets Ltd, The Design and Technology Association and British Nutrition Foundation. The scheme encourages and rewards good cooking within the classroom, supports the teaching of healthy eating and recognises the excellent work being undertaken by pupils.
On the day we cooked for the food awards, everyone made a dish, which was prepared in a certain time. We had to show the ingredients in the food award sheets. At the very end Mrs Tucker took photographs of our finished item

We had to use fruit and vegetables mainly for our dish because we were learning about ‘Healthy Eating’. Everybody made a different recipe for the taste award. Some were made up and some people used a set recipe. I made a ‘Traffic Light’ Fruit Salad and it was fun to do. There were pomegranate seeds, raspberries and pink grapefruit for ‘Red’. For ‘Orange’ I used banana, clementines and orange. For ‘Green’ I used kiwi, green apple and pear.

I made a rice salad that contained crystallised pineapple, dried apricots, carrots, several spices and stock for flavouring. The reason why I used those ingredients was because they were around the same colour and made a very healthy and tasty dish.
