A Taste of Spring

St Margaret’s joined with St Peter’s C of E Aided School, to perform a fund-raising concert for Heavitree Parish Church. Mrs Bonser, the Head of Music at St Peter’s, and I, have been planning this concert for some time, and meeting weekly, to make arrangements, exchange music, rehearse and so on.

I started feeling a real buzz about the occasion when St Peter’s arrived for our first joint concert band rehearsal. Our own band has significantly increased in size and when the St Peter’s players joined us, we totalled about 55 players and completely filled the PAC hall! For the concert, it was really exciting to be able to collaborate in so many items, in such a diverse range of musical styles and for such a wide range of instrumentalists and singers.

The concert itself had a wonderful atmosphere and all the students participated with obvious enthusiasm and commitment. Music is such a powerful force, and firm friendships were established, as ‘Facebook’ and email contacts were exchanged. We hope that this event was the first of many future joint ventures between our schools and of course, we were also very pleased to raise a significant amount of money for our local church.

Mary Lowles

The concert was great fun! It was a great experience. We made lots of new friends, as well as catching up with some of the people we knew already. Although we had many rehearsals, it was all worth it in the end. It would be excellent to do it again. Thank you to the schools, music staff and especially Mrs Lowles and Mrs Bonser for arranging everything.

Joint Key Stage 3 Choir

St Margaret’s Middle School Choir joined up with students from St Peter’s to perform ‘From a Distance’ by Julie Gold, under the direction of Mrs Tanner. It was truly magical and brought chills down my spine. The boys from St Peter’s really brought a depth to the choir to make it extra special.

Charlotte – Year 10

Joint String Chamber Orchestra

Some string players from St Peter’s joined our string chamber orchestra to perform Corelli’s Concerto in G minor. It was a great experience and the extra players really made the sound richer. It was a privilege to play with them and it would be nice to do it again.

Hannah – Year 10

Joint Brass Group

The joint brass group was a good chance to meet people with similar interests and very enjoyable. We played ‘Past Time With Good Company’, which sounded very good with several people in each section and the addition of Louise on the drum, making it sound more authentic.

Naomi – Year 10

Joint Flute Group

The 15 flautists combined very well together in a rendition of ‘Flute Rag’, a fun and lively piece, the style of which the performers portrayed very well. I thoroughly enjoyed being part of the group and thought it was a great success!

Bethany – Year 10

Joint Senior Choir

Our Chamber Choir joined together with some St Peter’s students to make up a Senior Choir. I thought the piece sounded really nice and the harmonies were really beautiful. The alto boys’ voices added real colour and texture to the performance. Overall, I thought it was a very pretty piece that really suited the choir.

Olivia – Year 9

Boomwhackers

We were all slightly dubious of the fluorescent plastic tubing which Mrs Bonser produced at the beginning of the Boomwhackers rehearsal, but by the end of it we were fully enjoying ourselves. For everyone, the Boomwhacker was a new instrument, learnt in the space of about ten minutes – what talented musicians we are! We played ‘The Blue Danube’ and it seemed that the audience really enjoyed our performance. Thank you, Mrs Bonser!

Natasha and Lucinda – Year 12

Joint Concert Band

Playing in Concert Band was a very positive experience, being able to play with lots of other enthusiastic musicians. We made an amazing sound and really enjoyed ourselves. We had great fun and socialised with some old friends and met some new friends. It was a great experience and I was very glad to be part of it.

Maya – Year 10

Finale

The finale was great fun. Everyone had a fabulous time together and it sounded fantastic and full of energy. We sang ‘I’m a Believer’ which everyone thoroughly enjoyed and it was accompanied by the band which gave it extra excitement and vitality. All performers had a brilliant time and it was the most exhilarating part of the whole evening.

Eleanor – Year 10

‘I’m a Believer’ was definitely the perfect way to end a magnificent concert. The atmosphere was electric and no-one escaped the electric energy that coursed around the church. It was great to have all the musicians joining in and the band played spectacularly well, prompting the encore of ‘I’m a Believer’, which, if possible, was even more fun the second time than the first. We know that everyone had such fun putting this concert together and to end it on such a high note, was the best way to end it!
