Charmouth Beach

On Wednesday Year 5 went to Charmouth beach to collect and learn about different fossils and how they were created, and after that to Lyme Regis to look at coastal defences.

We drove in the minibus, which took about an hour, and were met by a warden called Merrill. She was a fossil expert. She showed us the displays in the visitor centre and we watch a video in the theatre about how the cliffs had been created and why there were fossils in them. We found out about Mary Anning who found the very first fossil, which was an ichthyosaurus.  She talked to us about the history of the Jurassic coast and showed us different types of fossils and how to find them. We went onto the beach and walked towards Lyme Regis looking for fossils. Kaya found the first fossil, an ammonite. We all found lots of belemnites as well as lots more ammonites.  It was great fun. We had lunch on the sea front and popped into the gift shop quickly.

Have returned to the minibus, we drove down to Lyme Regis. We had a booklet of questions to answer about Lyme Regis’ sea defences. We walked along the harbour wall called the Cobb and we talked about why it had been built. It was very tilted and quite hard and uneven to walk on. We had to be very careful. We then went to the beach area and studied the groynes and facilities for tourists.

Mrs Allen was very kind and bought us all an ice cream! Sadly we had to go back to school, but we had had loads of fun that day and we learnt lots. We would love to go back there and find more fossils!
