Janet Ashe
19th June 2007- Janet Ashe (nee Langhorne) Returns to St Margaret’s after nearly 70 years.
This was a wonderful nostalgic occasion for Janet who attended St Margaret’s between 1926 and 1937. Now living in Ireland she was visiting her daughter in Bath and they both joined Miss Edbrooke, Mrs Williams and the Head girl team for coffee. Janet’s memory of her school friends and days at St Margarets is quite remarkable. She was intrigued when visiting the current staffroom as this recalled memories of Miss Edmonds whose study/ living quarters it had been and of her maid, Mabel.
She also looked at old archive photos, supplied by Mrs Yeo and was able to recount tales of games lessons in the grounds of the Orthopaedic Hospital and on the site of the current RDE hospital in Barrack Road. Also early science lessons held in the school greenhouse as well as taking School Certificate exams in the University College in Gandy Street which included a quick dash to Lyons for ice creams between papers. She was able to give us many names of her school contempories and remarkably name nearly all the staff from the school photo of 1936- a few included Miss Martin; Miss Ough; Mrs Moyle; Mrs Cooke; Miss Snow; Miss Passmore; Miss Whidborne; Miss Mayne; Miss Mackenzie and the French Mademoiselle!
