Daisy Pulls it Off!

The production ‘Daisy Pulls it Off’ was a definite success, with the audience enjoying fantastic acting from all involved. The cast had worked very hard for the show and had lots of fun along the way and it showed through their enthusiasm especially during their energetic dance routine to “Bad Boys”!

The play was watched by a full audience both nights, members included the schools original Daisy Meredith, and the standard was certainly met by our own Anna Whittingslow.

I remember when I first started at St Margaret’s and my sister was in U5. I was so excited to see her act in one of the first school productions that I had experienced – it happened to be ‘Daisy Pulls it Off!’ The performance had me ‘hooked’ on acting and theatre, straightaway. You can imagine my joy when I found out that this would be the production that I was to direct, at my old school, in my present capacity as Drama teacher! I have worked with the girls intensely for three weeks, with the odd rehearsal here or there before that. As ‘Daisy Pulls it Off’ is set in an all girls’ school, I could see the obvious appeal of this play, as could the cast. We have focused on the ‘exaggerated’ style of acting required, as it is all ‘jolly hockey sticks’, with a slap of the thigh! I’ve loved the fact that the language used has seemed somewhat alien to the girls taking part, yet they have come to grips with it and fully embraced the ‘over the top’ diction of a bygone era. I know that I have a fantastic cast, who have undergone a rehearsal process which has been a laugh a minute, with each and every one giving of their best. All that is left now is for me to wish you a ‘capital’ time!

The character of Daisy is one I will never forget. It has been a challenge but I have always had fun. The character herself has so much to her; she gives you something to think about, being a larger than life character with a strong, cheerful, personality. I was able to see the play before it was chosen as our school play and, when I saw it, I said to my friend that “I would love to be able to perform it someday”. When I was told that it was our production I just couldn’t wait to audition!

I often think fondly of St. Margaret’s and all the plays and events we took part in. It was just the best school. “Daisy Pulls it Off,” is a fun play and it must be very exciting for the school to be putting it on once again. I am sure it will be a great success. I remember not being able to sleep after the first night of the show (in fact after every night of the show!) because it was such an exhilerating experience.
Favourite parts of the show, to name a few: the hockey matches (more of a tactical dance than anything else and very tricky to get the lines in the right order! Lots of rehearsing of those scenes!); the scene of the accident in the storm where we had to rescue girls from the cliff (it felt very dramatic at the time...); riding on the train to school at the beginning of term (everybody jiggling up and down to pretend we were moving!); the school assemblies with the ridiculous announcements and singing the school song (lots of sniggering and whispering going on behind backs in those scenes I recall); solving the clues to the treasure hunt with Trixie (Ellie Williams) and sneaking around in the dead of night (something about not letting the Bolsheviks getting their hands on the treasure!) and all the good old fashioned sentiment - plenty of ‘You’re a Brick’ ‘Hoorah!’ etc etc! Thinking back though, Daisy was a bit of a goody two shoes wasn’t she? I loved it all though, ah to be back in the good old days...
